This is an industrial-design specification, not an essay. The format matches the Phonograph spec at /objects/phonograph3 and the Almanac spec at /objects/almanac4: thesis → content → form → audio → edition-mechanics → manufacturing → chapbook → essay-companion → software-companion → reproducibility → limitations → status. Every empirical claim is footnoted to a primary source or marked as an engineering estimate. The source-content dependency — the ten Anti-Edison Vol I essays remain in draft — is named as a gate, not buried in the footnotes.
The Lineage Album, Volume I is Stax Edition III in the drop-house charter1. It is the third physical artifact in the /objects surface of the stax.dev portfolio2 and the third instance of the four-component capsule format (object + essay + software + audio) that defines a Stax Edition.
1. Thesis — why this object exists
The Anti-Edison arc is the nineteen-essay reframing of Thomas Edison as the canonical Counter-Example merchant — the figure whose architectural failures (patent-litigation-as-strategy across the 1880s and 1890s, the public-fear campaign over the War of the Currents, the ~$2 million iron-ore-mining capital displacement at Ogdensburg, the 1903 Topsy spectacle, the structural displacement of the Edison-Electric DC kit-supply chain by the Westinghouse-Tesla transformer-based AC architecture) rhyme directly with the failure modes visible in the 2020s American AI infrastructure stack5. The arc is load-bearing canon material — it makes the appliance-layer doctrine of the Mercantile Thesis6 concrete by showing what happens when the operator refuses to own the bottleneck and chooses kit-supply-spread extraction instead.
The Lineage Album, Volume I is the four-component capsule that pulls the first ten essays of that arc (essays 01–10) off the digital surface and turns them into a physical, gatefold-bound, audiophile-grade artifact. The argument for the LP form is that the Anti-Edison arc is the most audible of the Stax canon: the War of the Currents was litigated through public fear delivered by newspaper and pamphlet; the 1903 Topsy electrocution was distributed as a filmed spectacle whose audio track is part of the historical record; Pearl Street 1882 is the canonical sound of the first commercial-scale dynamos in Manhattan; Edison's phonograph rivalry with Emile Berliner sits at the centre of the phonograph-and-disc commercial battle that produced the LP format itself. Sound is the thread. The LP form is structurally right because the source material was already a sound argument.
Volume II (essays 11–19 — the deeper Edison-Berliner phonograph rivalry, film-operations history, Edison-Westinghouse litigation, GE formation, the cloud-hyperscaler and EV-industry cases) is named in §11 as a future Edition. This specification commits only to Vol I.
2. The content — ten essays, four LP sides
The audio component reproduces the first ten Anti-Edison essays as a narrated sequence over a commissioned ambient bed (§4). Essays are mapped to the four sides of the two-LP package:

Total runtime: ~45 minutes, distributed ~14 / 9 / 9 / 13 across A1/A2/B1/B2. The deliberately unequal split reserves the longer sides for the narration-dense openers (A1: the foundational reframing through Topsy through Ogdensburg) and the structural payoff (B2: the modern-AI parallel cases). Inner-groove distortion is worst on the inner ~3 minutes of any side at 33⅓ rpm10; the half-speed master (§4) is the engineering response.
The two-LP format follows the Death Waltz Recording Co convention for narrated-essay LPs11. A single 180g LP at 33⅓ rpm with audiophile-grade groove spacing tops out at ~22 minutes per side; a 45-minute program would push the groove density past the audiophile threshold on at least one side. The two-LP package is the conservative engineering choice.
3. Industrial design — the form
Figure 1 — Gatefold sleeve, outer panels, telegraph-cable Living Map. Render to ship as the cover proof returns from the press.
Vinyl. Two 180g audiophile-grade pressed records, black vinyl, no splatter or color variants (the charter rules out decorative-rather-than-functional aesthetic1). Pressing tolerance ±3g per industry standard. Discs carry a typographic-only label (Charter + JetBrains Mono in the Stax design system2): side number, track listing, run-out matrix code, and the Stax word-mark only.
Sleeve. Gatefold (single fold along the spine), 12.375 × 12.375 in standard LP trim, ~3 mm board thickness, printed on uncoated 350gsm cover stock so the foil reads cleanly. The outer panels carry an oceanman-canon Living Map12: left panel — global telegraph cables c. 1903, rendered from the 1903 Statistical Atlas of the Twelve Submarine Cable Companies held at the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum archives13; right panel — contemporary submarine cables 2026, rendered from the live oceanman dataset of 693 ingested cables14. The two panels make the visual thesis: Edison did not own the bottleneck, the cables did. The 1903 telegraph operators built the substrate over which the next century of commercial-information arbitrage flowed; the contemporary subsea-cable operators are building the substrate over which the next century of AI-inference-and-training data flows.
Foil stamp. Silver foil "Stax Edition III" on spine and back panel in the Stax word-mark typography2. Numbered serial ("№412 of 500") is silver-foil-stamped on the chapbook's back endpaper (§7), not on the outer sleeve — the serial is the colophon artifact of the inner object. Brass-die specification matches the Almanac standard25.
Endpapers. Silver-foil abstracted line-art of the trans-Atlantic telegraph routes on the inner gatefold panels — a quieter register than the outer Living Map, visible only when the gatefold opens.
Chapbook pocket. The 64-page perfect-bound chapbook (§7) is bound into the gatefold's inner left pocket as part of the sleeve construction, not glued in as afterthought. ~3.3-inch margin around the 9 × 9 chapbook. Removable for reading, re-insertable for storage.
Disc sleeves. Two anti-static polylined inner sleeves, plain white, functional only.
4. The audio — narration, ambient, scoring, mastering
The audio program follows the Lineage Mode convention established in Edition I's Phonograph as Object Lesson (Piper TTS + sox/ffmpeg pipeline + ambient bed, output as MP3/Opus and 24-bit WAV)16, elevated for the vinyl-grade ship:
Narration. Two production-stage paths are open; decision lands at the bid stage. Piper TTS path (continuity with Edition I) — the Stax Piper voice profile that produced the Edition I pilot, AGPL end-to-end17, cost-floor. Human-narrator path (upgrade) — a contracted narrator in the Stripe Press / Tortoise Media editorial-podcast register (calibrated, primary-source-respectful, no NPR-inflection performance), single session per side, ~$3–5k additive at union-equivalent rates. The narrator is named in the colophon (§7) per charter §71. Recommendation: the human-narrator path for Vol I, because the vinyl-ship surface is the higher-stakes ship and the narration is the load-bearing surface against which the ambient bed and scoring mix. Edition I's Piper baseline was right for the Phonograph capsule; Edition III's Album warrants the upgrade.
Ambient bed. Commissioned or sourced period-appropriate field recordings per essay: Menlo Park laboratory texture for 01 (anvils, telegraph keys, dynamos at low cycle); Coney Island Luna Park carnival ambient for 02; Ogdensburg stamp-mill and magnetic-separator vernacular for 03; late-19th-century US federal courtroom ambient for 04; factory hum, telegraphic keying, and generator ambient calibrated to the 1888–1893 plant floors for 05; the Manhattan steam-mains pressure-release signature for 06, sourced from the existing Sovereign Thermal field recordings15; early-cinema-projector ambient for 07; lower-Manhattan-c.-1882 ambient for 08, named honestly as commissioned-reconstruction since no recording of the 4 September 1882 Pearl Street commissioning exists; contemporary data-centre cabinet hum for 09, commissioned at a US data-centre named in the colophon; post-1893 Westinghouse-era commercial-electrical ambient for 10.
Library of Congress American Memory and Internet Archive period collections are sourced as US-federal public-domain where the recordings predate 192818; commissioned recordings are CC-BY-NC 4.0 per charter §1229. The sourcing-versus-commissioning matrix is named in the chapbook colophon.
Scoring. Minimal, acoustic only. A recurring four-bar piano motif keyed to "the bottleneck" — the architectural commitment Edison refused — and a contrasting four-bar motif for "the merchant figure" (plays under each essay's protagonist register), plus a dissonant register that reads as the Counter-Example signature. No electronic instruments. The era — 1880s through 1903 — demands acoustic instrumentation; the dissonance register is the only modern intervention and is named in the colophon as the deliberate contemporary insertion. Total scoring runtime: ~10 minutes of motivic material composed for the full 45-minute program. Compensation to the commissioned composer is named (commercial rate, not Veblen)1 and the composer is credited in the chapbook colophon.
Mastering. Half-speed cut19 at one of two shortlisted plants — Bernie Grundman Mastering (Hollywood, CA) as named lead, Sterling Sound (NYC) as named alternate1. Half-speed cutting cuts the lacquer at 16⅔ rpm against a half-speed-modulated source, producing measurably lower inner-groove distortion than full-speed cutting; the technique is the engineering best-practice for spoken-word vinyl and the canonical Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab and Analogue Productions discipline. It adds ~$1,500–$2,500 to the mastering line item, named in the BOM (§5) and engineering-justified by the 14-minute Side A1's inner-groove profile. Grundman has the longest US half-speed-cut record (Aja half-speed master is canonical; the Grundman lathe is the US reference instrument); Sterling Sound's NYC location simplifies in-person editor attendance.
Total runtime. Approximately 45 minutes across the four sides of the two-LP package, with track distribution per §2.
Digital companion. The same audio program ships as high-bitrate AAC + lossless FLAC + Opus + MP3 at stax.dev/canon/audio/lineage-album-vol-i/, per the Edition I audio-companion convention16. Buyers of the LP capsule receive a QR-coded download link printed on the inner sleeve of Disc 1; non-LP buyers can subscribe to the audio-only feed for a fraction of the capsule price.
5. Edition mechanics
Run: 500 units. Larger than Edition I (100, Phonograph) and Edition II (250, Almanac) because vinyl pressing economies kick in at 500+ (lacquer cut, metalwork, and press setup amortize). Also reflects the Anti-Edison arc being the most-anticipated of the first three Editions per pre-launch interest on the Quant Mercantilism surface26.
Retail price: $150. Premium-but-honest per charter §51. The two-LP package + 64-page chapbook + commissioned ambient + commissioned scoring + half-speed master justify the $150 band against $120-tier museum-shop LPs and $200-tier Mobile Fidelity / Analogue Productions reissues. 500 × $150 = $75,000 topline.
Sales window. October 2026 waitlist opens; January 2027 ship. 2026-10-06 (Tuesday 9:00 AM Eastern per charter §8): waitlist opens at stax.dev/edition-iii, capped to 600 (run + 20%). 2026-10-13: waitlist converts to 7-day purchase window. 2026-10-20: purchase window closes; order intake to press by 2026-10-27. 2026-11 through 2027-01: vinyl pressing (12–16-week industry standard), chapbook printing, sleeve printing + foil stamping, final assembly all in parallel. 2027-01-15: target ship date. Vinyl pressing lead time is the load-bearing constraint; slippage to 20+ weeks is normal during pressing surges20.
Shipping. USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate (US); DHL eCommerce or USPS First-Class International. International customs adds $15–40 per unit per destination21, named honestly on the purchase page; no "gift" undervalued declarations.
Anti-flipping clause per charter §12: first-year transfers must be at price-paid-or-below to maintain colophon / serial-number authentication. Soft enforcement; explicit brand stance.
6. Vinyl pressing partner shortlist
Per charter §71. Names are the shortlist, not yet committed; the spec commits to at least two quotes before order intake opens.

Reasoning: audiophile-grade in-house plating and lathe, US-domestic which keeps customs simple, longest continuous spoken-word pressing record in the US market, and the in-house lacquer-cut option if the Grundman or Sterling cut needs an additional matched pressing pass. QRP is the named lead for the Vol I pressing; Third Man Pressing (Detroit) as the named alternate for Vol II.

Against retail $150 the per-unit margin is ~$80; the margin funds editorial labor (foreword + arc-spanning edit pass), Lineage Mode runtime maintenance, and unsold-tail inventory. Downgrading to Piper TTS recovers ~$5/unit; the cost line is sensitive to the narrator decision and to the press-quote return.
7. The chapbook
A 64-page perfect-bound essay collection bound into the gatefold pocket. Trim 9 × 9 inches; smyth-sewn binding for opening flat; Mohawk Superfine Eggshell 80lb text24 body stock; letterpress cover. Contents:
- pp. i–xx: Foreword by Stax (~1,200 words). The new
editorial component shipping only with Edition III. Names the Anti-Edison arc as load-bearing canon material, the Counter-Example merchant reading as central reframing, and the contemporary AI infrastructure parallel. Exclusive to LP buyers for twelve months after Edition III ships, then publishes to /journal/anti-edison-vol-i-foreword.html under CC-BY 4.0 per charter §1229. Plus a biographical timeline of Edison c. 1869–1931 in the Morris7 / Israel8 marker style with dated references to each Vol I essay.
- pp. 1–56: the ten Anti-Edison Vol I essays in order,
footnotes-as-endnotes per chapter, Charter Roman 11 pt / 14 pt leading per the design system2. Body offset-printed at Asia Pacific Offset23; letterpress is uneconomic at 56 pages and the Almanac routes letterpress to calendar spreads instead.
- pp. 57–60: **Selected primary-source quotes from the Edison
Papers** (Rutgers, ~5 million pages digitized)9, reproduced with permission. Dated, attributed to manuscript folder, cross-referenced to essays.
- pp. 61–64: Colophon. Pressing plant, mastering engineer,
narrator (or Piper TTS attribution), composer, field-recording engineer, illustrator, cover printer, foil partner, paper, binding house. Serial-numbered silver-foil stamp ("№412 of 500") on the back endpaper.
Printing. Body offset on Mohawk Superfine Eggshell 80lb text24; foil-stamped letterpress cover at Hatch Show Print or Smock; Smyth-sewn binding in-house at APO23 — the canonical Stripe Press / Folio Society print partner.
8. The companion essay (the editorial component)
The capsule's essay component is the Anti-Edison Vol I arc (essays 01–10) living on two surfaces: digital at /journal/anti-edison-01-edison-as-original-scalper through -10-tesla-licensing-rejection, CC-BY 4.0 per charter §1229, with cross-references to chapbook and audio; and physical as the chapbook bound into the LP gatefold pocket (§7), same essays plus the LP-exclusive Foreword.
The new editorial content created for Edition III is the Foreword (§7); the rest already exists as arc material — currently all draft (§11). This is the load-bearing source-content dependency.
9. The companion software
The capsule's software component is the Lineage Mode runtime upgrade: the Membrane Framework (Elixir) audio pipeline plus the AETHER orchestration substrate27 that produces the audio program from the canonical Anti-Edison source markdown. Edition III's audio is the reference output of Lineage Mode runtime v1.0. Ships as:

- Reference output. Edition III masters publish as canonical
reference; anyone forking the runtime can reproduce from source markdown plus the CC-BY-NC ambient-bed and scoring assets.
The runtime is the same engine that produced Edition I's Phonograph as Object Lesson16; Edition III is the v1.0 milestone (Edition I shipped at v0.1).
10. Reproducibility — the open-data posture
Per charter §1229 and the runnable-claim contract2:
- The ten Anti-Edison Vol I essays publish to
/journal/once
the drafts ship publicly. Currently in the Stax workspace, gated on the publication ship that opens the Edition III window (§11).
- The audio masters are CC-BY-NC 4.0; source markdown plus
ambient-bed assets plus Lineage Mode runtime are AGPL.
- **The pressing plant, mastering engineer, paper vendor, binding
house, and field-recording engineer are named in the colophon** (§7) — supply-chain transparency by construction per sentinel-sbom28.
- This specification is CC-BY 4.0; anyone may fork the
LP-and-chapbook capsule format for their own narrated-essay release.
- Not open-sourced: the commissioned scoring (composer retains
copyright, Stax licenses) and the Living Map illustration (illustrator retains copyright, Stax licenses for the Edition III printing only). Both creators named in colophon.
11. Honest limitations
Per the lab-notebook discipline2: every limitation named explicitly, no hand-waving.
- The Anti-Edison Vol I arc is currently all draft. Edition III's
ship is gated on the public publication of essays 01–10 to /journal/. The drafts are full-length (1,700–2,500 words each; ~21,000 words total) and structured, but require an editorial pass to remove draft markers, complete the footnote bibliography, and resolve a small number of unresolved citation queries. Estimated four to six weeks of writing-and-editing if pursued seriously. Named as a gate, not a footnote: the October 2026 waitlist does not open until publication lands.
- Within Vol I, the most-ready drafts are essays 08–10 (Pearl
Street 1882, Modern AI Wrapper, Tesla Licensing Rejection — each at ~2,400 words, most developed structurally). The least-ready are 02 and 04 (Topsy 1903 and Patent Strategy at ~1,700 words — structurally complete but thinnest on primary-source density). The editorial-pass priority orders accordingly.
- The two-LP format makes shipping costs notable. US Priority
Mail Flat Rate covers most domestic destinations; international customs adds $15–40 per unit depending on destination, named on the purchase page. Buyers in EU and Australia / NZ should expect the higher end of the customs band.
- The half-speed master adds ~$1,500–$2,500 to mastering cost.
Named in the BOM (§5); engineering-justified by Side A1's inner-groove profile.
- The Living Map sleeve art is not yet sourced. ~3–4 weeks
lead-time from contractor selection to print-ready files. Style brief named in §6; illustrator not yet contracted.
- The Piper-TTS-vs-human-narrator decision is not yet committed.
Recommendation in §4 is the human-narrator path; decision lands at the production bid stage. Cost differential ~$3–5k per session, named honestly.
- Volume II (essays 11–19) is named as future-Edition shape only.
This specification commits to Vol I. The Vol II essays exist in earlier draft form (640–2,107 words each) and ship in a future Edition not yet specced.
- No prototype LP pressing has been pulled. No first-article
inspection. No press partner has quoted. Every cost line in §5–6 is engineering-estimate-against-industry-rate; field-verified numbers ship with the Edition III run and feed back via a Workshop log.
12. Status
status: concept per frontmatter.
Concept stage means: this specification exists; no pressing partner is committed; no mastering session is booked; no narrator is contracted; the ten source essays remain in draft. The /workshop/ log tracks the move from concept → bid-quote → editorial-ship → master-cut → press-run → ship with dated entries. Specific milestones (per charter §131):
