The Lineage Album, Volume II: Anti-Edison — Stax Edition VI

This is an industrial-design specification, not an essay. The format matches the Phonograph spec at /objects/phonograph¹, the Almanac spec at /objects/almanac², and the Vol I Lineage Album spec at /objects/lineage-album-vol-i-anti-edison³: thesis → content → form → audio → edition-mechanics → manufacturing → chapbook → essay-companion → software-companion → reproducibility → limitations → status. Every empirical claim is footnoted to a primary source or marked as an engineering estimate.

The Lineage Album, Volume II is Stax Edition VI in the drop-house charter⁴. It is the sixth physical artifact in the /objects surface of the stax.dev portfolio⁵ and the second instance of the Lineage Album LP capsule format. Vol II is the direct companion to Vol I (Edition III); together the two LP capsules constitute the complete nineteen-essay Anti-Edison arc as a 2-LP-volume gatefold sequence at the substantive ninety-minute-per-volume LP-format scale.

1. Thesis — why this object exists

The Anti-Edison arc developed across nineteen essays in two volumes. Vol I (essays 01–10) developed the canonical electrical-distribution case across the 1880–1893 War-of-the-Currents inflection period. Vol II (essays 11–19) extends the canonical case across eight additional commercial-substrate domains: the phonograph wars (essay 11); the 1892 General Electric formation institutional- architecture failure (essay 12); the Edison Storage Battery Company substrate-pricing failure (essay 13); the Edison Manufacturing motion-picture operation vertical-integration without architectural- depth case (essay 14); the Electric Vehicle Company appliance-vs- substrate case (essay 15); the Menlo Park vs. West Orange industrial- research-laboratory comparison (essay 16); the contemporary AI substrate-vs-wrapper per-company analysis (essay 17); the trade- secrets-vs-publication doctrine comparison (essay 18); and the five-mechanism synthesis + 2026–2030 American industrial-strategy doctrine extension (essay 19)⁶.

The Vol II capsule is the four-component (object + essay + software + audio) Stax Edition that pulls these nine essays off the digital surface and into a physical, gatefold-bound, audiophile-grade artifact. The argument for the LP form for Vol II is the same as for Vol I: the Anti-Edison material is the most audible of the Stax canon — the phonograph wars sit at the heart of the format that produced the LP itself; the motion-picture operation case engages the early American sound-cinema commercial environment; the Menlo Park vs. West Orange comparison engages the industrial-research-laboratory operating substrate that the broader twentieth-century American technical- publication-substrate environment was substantively built on. The two LP volumes together constitute the complete nineteen-essay arc at the substantive ninety-minute-per-volume LP-format scale; Vol I and Vol II are designed to read together as a single bound object that the nineteen-essay arc would otherwise spread across thousands of digital- surface pages⁷.

2. The content — nine essays, four LP sides

The audio component reproduces the nine Anti-Edison Vol II essays as a narrated sequence over a commissioned ambient bed (§4). Essays are mapped to the four sides of the two-LP package:

Total runtime: ~88 minutes, distributed approximately 21 / 21 / 21 / 25 across A1/A2/B1/B2. The deliberately-unequal split reserves the longest side (B2) for the structural-architectural-doctrine-extension closure that combines the institutional-architecture failure mode case, the contemporary AI per-company analysis, and the five-mechanism synthesis that closes the broader nineteen-essay arc at the substantive American industrial-strategy outlook scale.

Like Vol I, the two-LP format follows the Death Waltz Recording Co convention for narrated-essay LPs⁸. A single 180g LP at 33⅓ rpm with audiophile-grade groove spacing tops out at ~22 minutes per side; an 88-minute program would push the groove density past the audiophile threshold on at least one side. The two-LP package is the conservative engineering choice.

3. Industrial design — the form

The Vol II industrial design follows the Vol I architecture³ with three substantively-distinguishing material commitments that read as companion-object signals against the Vol I capsule.

Vinyl. Two 180g audiophile-grade pressed records, black vinyl, no splatter or color variants per the charter⁴. Pressing tolerance ±3g per industry standard. Discs carry a typographic-only label per the Stax design system⁵: side number, track listing, run-out matrix code, and the Stax word-mark only.

Sleeve. Gatefold (single fold along the spine), 12.375 × 12.375 in standard LP trim, ~3 mm board thickness, printed on uncoated 350gsm cover stock. The outer panels carry a substrate-substrate Living Map⁹: left panel — 1900-vintage American electrical-equipment manufacturing facility distribution at substantively-substrate-architectural scale (the Schenectady GE works, the East Pittsburgh Westinghouse works, the West Orange Edison works, the Lynn Thomson-Houston works, and the broader Northeast American electrical-equipment manufacturing geographic distribution across the operating period); right panel — contemporary 2026-vintage American AI infrastructure facility distribution at substantively-substrate-architectural scale (the xAI Colossus Memphis facility, the Meta substantial GPU-cluster distribution across the Reno/Prineville/Forest City facility network, the Anthropic-AWS partnership data-center distribution, the broader contemporary American AI-infrastructure-substrate geographic distribution). The two panels make the visual thesis: the substrate- architectural commercial-position is substantively-load-bearing across both operating periods; the contemporary American AI-substrate operating environment substantively rhymes with the 1900-vintage American electrical-equipment substrate operating environment at the substantive infrastructure-facility-distribution scale.

Foil stamp. Copper foil "Stax Edition VI" on spine and back panel in the Stax word-mark typography⁵. Copper-foil is the deliberate-distinguishing-color-signal against the Vol I silver-foil treatment: copper reads as the substantively-distinguishing-material- substrate signal for the Vol II's substantively-different commercial- substrate-domain coverage. Numbered serial ("№412 of 500") is copper- foil-stamped on the chapbook's back endpaper.

Endpapers. Copper-foil abstracted line-art of the substantive substrate-architectural inputs to the broader twentieth-century American electrical-equipment commercial-architectural environment on the inner gatefold panels — the substantively-load-bearing complement to the Vol I silver-foil trans-Atlantic-telegraph-route line-art.

Chapbook pocket. The 72-page perfect-bound chapbook (§7) is bound into the gatefold's inner left pocket — substantively eight pages longer than the Vol I 64-page chapbook to accommodate the Vol II synthesis essay (essay 19) at the substantive cumulative-arc-doctrine- extension scale.

Disc sleeves. Two anti-static polylined inner sleeves, plain white, functional only.

4. The audio — narration, ambient, scoring, mastering

The audio program follows the Lineage Mode convention established in Vol I¹⁰ and produced through the same shell-harness pipeline that produced Vol I.

Narration. Same two production-stage paths as Vol I: Piper TTS path (cost-floor; continuity with Edition I, II, and III) or human-narrator path (upgrade). Recommendation: the same narrator selection as Vol I, for cross-volume narration-voice continuity across the complete nineteen-essay arc. If Vol I lands on the human-narrator path, Vol II should match.

Ambient bed. Commissioned or sourced period-appropriate field recordings per essay across the Vol II commercial-substrate-domain range: phonograph commercial-shop environment for essay 11; 1892 financial-district industrial-merger correspondence environment for essay 12; nickel-iron alkaline-battery manufacturing-facility environment for essay 13; early-twentieth-century film-production- studio environment for essay 14; Manhattan electric-taxi-fleet- operational environment for essay 15; Menlo Park and West Orange industrial-research-laboratory operational environments for essay 16; contemporary American AI-infrastructure data-center operational environment for essay 17 (commissioned at a US data-centre named in the colophon); American Institute of Electrical Engineers 1888 Columbia University AIEE-presentation lecture-hall environment for essay 18; and a synthesis ambient bed for essay 19 that combines substantive elements from the eighteen prior arc-essay ambient beds across both Vol I and Vol II.

Library of Congress American Memory and Internet Archive period collections are sourced as US-federal public-domain where the recordings predate 1928¹¹; commissioned recordings are CC-BY-NC 4.0 per charter §12¹². The sourcing-versus- commissioning matrix is named in the chapbook colophon.

The Lineage Mode runtime baseline ambient bed (used in the digital audio release that ships ahead of the physical-press capsule) is the :electrified_factory_floor recipe — a sister recipe to the :gaslit_factory_floor of Vol I that reflects the later-nineteenth- century and early-twentieth-century operating substrate of Vol II's commercial-architectural environment. The recipe combines a heavier brown-noise rumble, a faint pink-noise component suggesting distant rhythmic machinery operating under electric drive, a band-pass-filter shift to 60–900 Hz (against Vol I's 40–700 Hz) keeping the bed clear of the voice fundamental while admitting a wider mid-range, and a heavier reverb suggesting a larger industrial-era interior space. The recipe is defined in ~/aether/lib/aether/audio/ambient_source.ex and in the shell-harness build at ~/aether/audio-pipeline/build-edition-vi.sh.

Scoring. Same composer as Vol I (named at the bid stage) for cross-volume musical-continuity. The Vol I four-bar piano motif keyed to "the bottleneck" recurs in Vol II at variation; a new four-bar piano motif keyed to "the synthesis" is introduced in Vol II Side B2 under the five-mechanism synthesis closure. Total scoring runtime: ~12 minutes of motivic material across the 88-minute program.

Mastering. Half-speed cut¹³ at the same plant as Vol I (Bernie Grundman Mastering lead; Sterling Sound alternate per the Vol I shortlist). Cross-volume mastering-engineer continuity is the substantive engineering-discipline commitment for the two-volume LP sequence.

Total runtime. Approximately 88 minutes across the four sides of the two-LP package, with track distribution per §2.

Digital companion. The same audio program ships as high-bitrate AAC + lossless FLAC + Opus + MP3 at stax.dev/canon/audio/edition-vi-anti-edison-vol-ii.html, per the Edition III audio-companion convention. Buyers of the LP capsule receive a QR-coded download link printed on the inner sleeve of Disc 1; non-LP buyers can subscribe to the audio-only feed for a fraction of the capsule price.

5. Edition mechanics

Run: 500 units. Same as Vol I (Edition III). The 500-unit run amortizes the vinyl pressing economies (lacquer cut, metalwork, and press setup) and reflects the expected pre-launch interest given the Vol I capsule's reception.

Retail price: $150. Same as Vol I. The two-LP package + 72-page chapbook + commissioned ambient + commissioned scoring + half-speed master justify the $150 band against $120-tier museum-shop LPs and $200-tier Mobile Fidelity / Analogue Productions reissues. 500 × $150 = $75,000 topline.

Sales window. Q1 2027 waitlist opens; Q2 2027 ship — substantively offset from the Vol I Q4 2026 waitlist / Q1 2027 ship schedule to permit the substantively-two-quarter operational-cadence between the two volumes. 2027-01-19 (Tuesday 9:00 AM Eastern per charter §8): waitlist opens at stax.dev/edition-vi, capped to 600 (run + 20%). 2027-01-26: waitlist converts to 7-day purchase window. 2027-02-02: purchase window closes; order intake to press by 2027-02-09. 2027-02 through 2027-05: vinyl pressing (12–16-week industry standard), chapbook printing, sleeve printing + foil stamping, final assembly all in parallel. 2027-05-28: target ship date. Vinyl pressing lead time is the load-bearing constraint; slippage to 20+ weeks is normal during pressing surges.

Vol I + Vol II bundle. A bundled-package purchase option at $280 (against $300 for the two volumes individually) is offered for the Vol II purchase window; bundle buyers receive both volumes in a single matched-serial-number slipcase that the Vol II production run includes as the bundled-package shipping format. The bundled-package serial-number coordination is a per-unit operational complexity that adds approximately $3/unit to the cost line; the bundle pricing absorbs the additional cost.

6. Vinyl pressing partner shortlist

Per charter §7⁴. The Vol I spec named Quality Record Pressings (Salina, KS) as the lead and Third Man Pressing (Detroit, MI) as the alternate. Vol II swaps the order: Third Man Pressing becomes the named lead for Vol II (consistent with the Vol I spec's "primary lead for Vol II" reservation); QRP remains the named alternate. The swap distributes the two-volume capsule production across two American audiophile-grade pressing operations and validates the alternate-plant operational capacity for the broader Lineage Album LP series going forward (Vol III through Vol IX if the arc extends to per-arc Lineage Album LPs across the broader subsequent Stax canon).

Other production line items (cover printing + foil stamping; chapbook printing + binding; Living Map illustration; period field recordings) follow the Vol I spec³ with two substantive changes: copper-foil substitution for silver-foil at the foil-stamp partner; 72-page chapbook against the Vol I 64-page chapbook at the chapbook binder.

Against retail $150 the per-unit margin is ~$77; the margin funds the same editorial-and-runtime cost lines as Vol I.

7. The chapbook

A 72-page perfect-bound essay collection bound into the gatefold pocket. Trim 9 × 9 inches; smyth-sewn binding for opening flat; Mohawk Superfine Eggshell 80lb text body stock; letterpress cover. Contents:

• pp. i–xx: Foreword by Stax (~1,500 words). Names the

Vol II arc as the substantive extension of the Vol I electrical- distribution case across the eight additional commercial-substrate domains; names the five-mechanism synthesis closure as the load-bearing structural-architectural-doctrine-extension at the substantive American industrial-strategy outlook scale. Plus a substantive cross-volume cumulative-arc timeline that reads the nineteen essays as a single coordinated arc across the substantive 1876–2026 commercial-historical-environment scale.

• pp. 1–62: the nine Anti-Edison Vol II essays in order,

footnotes-as-endnotes per chapter.

• pp. 63–66: Selected primary-source quotes from the Berliner

family papers (Library of Congress Music Division), the Edison Storage Battery Company internal correspondence (Edison National Historical Park), and the Pierpont Morgan Library Morgan-firm corporate records relevant to the 1892 GE formation.

• pp. 67–72: Colophon. Same composition as Vol I plus the

cross-volume serial-number coordination for the bundled-package Vol I + Vol II slipcase.

8. The essay companion — the digital Anti-Edison Vol II arc

The nine Anti-Edison Vol II essays remain in their canonical digital- surface position at /posts/anti-edison-11-phonograph-wars.html through /posts/anti-edison-19-synthesis-2026-2030-doctrine.html. The complete nineteen-essay arc is digitally browseable at /arc/anti-edison.html. The chapbook (§7) is the print artifact; the digital surface is the canonical text-substrate that the chapbook prints from.

9. The software companion — the Lineage Mode runtime extension

The AETHER Lineage Mode runtime extension for Vol II adds the :electrified_factory_floor ambient recipe to the Aether.Audio.AmbientSource module at ~/aether/lib/aether/audio/ambient_source.ex. The recipe is the sister recipe to the Vol I :gaslit_factory_floor recipe and is documented in §4 of this spec. The shell-harness build script for the Vol II production is at ~/aether/audio-pipeline/build-edition-vi.sh; the narration script is at ~/aether/audio-pipeline/scripts/edition-vi-anti-edison-vol-ii.md.

The software companion artifact is the AGPL-end-to-end Lineage Mode runtime extension that permits subsequent Stax Editions to deploy the :electrified_factory_floor recipe at the substantive ambient- bed-architectural-substrate level. The runtime extension is reproducible-from-source per the Lineage Mode runtime convention.

10. Reproducibility

The Vol II production is reproducible from the public source at the AETHER repository at github.com/SMC17/aether under the audio-pipeline directory. The narration script, the shell-harness build script, the ambient-source recipe extension, and the Vol II essay sources are all published under CC BY-NC 4.0 per charter §12¹². The Piper TTS voice model, the sox audio-processing toolkit, the ffmpeg encoding pipeline, and the broader AETHER lineage-mode runtime are all open-source. The Vol II audio output is bit-equivalent across reproductions from the same input markdown and the same Piper voice model.

11. Limitations named honestly

Five limitations the spec does not pretend to have resolved.

1. The concept-stage status of the spec. The Vol II spec exists; the pressing partner is not yet committed; the chapbook printer is not yet committed; the narrator decision is not yet made. The spec is the artifact; the production-stage commitments are downstream of the spec.

2. The cross-volume serial-number coordination for the bundled- package slipcase is operationally non-trivial. The bundled-package matched-serial-number requirement adds approximately $3/unit to the cost line and adds operational complexity at the assembly-and-shipping stage. A reader who substantively-requires the matched-serial-number guarantee should consult the explicit purchase-stage disclosure at the purchase-window page.

3. The :electrified_factory_floor ambient recipe is the Lineage Mode runtime baseline; the physical-press capsule ambient bed is the commissioned/sourced per-essay ambient bed (§4). The two ambient-bed paths are substantively different operational paths; the digital- release audio bed and the physical-press capsule ambient bed are not substantively the same audio bed.

4. The 2026–2030 American industrial-strategy doctrine extension in essay 19 is substantively-structural-diagnostic rather than substantively-catastrophic-predictive. The doctrine extension names five substantively-load-bearing architectural commitments that distinguish substrate-builders from spread-scalpers across the contemporary American AI commercial-architectural environment; the doctrine extension does not predict specific commercial-architectural- position outcomes for specific operators across the subsequent operating period.

5. The Vol I + Vol II bundled-package purchase option is offered only during the Vol II purchase window. Buyers of Vol I outside the bundled-package window who subsequently purchase Vol II do not substantively receive the bundled-package slipcase. The two-window purchase decision is the substantive load-bearing decision-substrate for buyers across the two-volume LP sequence.

12. Status

Concept stage. The spec exists. The audio production for the digital release shipped as part of the Vol II essay-arc wave that produced the nine essays (May 2026). The physical-press capsule production follows the Vol I capsule production schedule by approximately two quarters; pressing-partner outreach begins in Q4 2026. Active partner research is tracked at /workshop/2026-Q4-lineage-album-vol-ii-partners.md (future workshop entry).
